Alone in Berlin
DIRECTOR Vincent Perez
CAST Emma Thompson, Daniel Brühl, Brendan Gleeson, Mikael Persbrandt
Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson star in this powerful story of a husband and wife who became part of the German resistance in Berlin during the Second World War.
A handsome adaptation of Hans Fallada’s 1947 novel, based on the true story of a husband and wife who became part of the German Resistance in Berlin during the Second World War. Devastated by the death of their son and disturbed by the fate of a Jewish woman in their building, they start leaving revolutionary postcards at random points around the city and Brühl’s police inspector is charged with finding the culprits. Thompson and Gleeson give committed, insightful performances in a powerful story of day-to-day resistance.
(2016 UK / France / Germany 103 mins)
Here is a handsomely produced and solidly acted period drama set in Nazi Germany, based on the postwar novel by Hans Fallada and based on a true-life case … Part of the story’s potency lies in the fact that this is a kind of resistance that anyone can imagine carrying out, however timid, however lonely, however secretly convinced that its effects are likely to be minimal … Gleeson, Thompson and Brühl give strong performances and this is a well-carpentered film.
