DIRECTOR Michael Pearce
CAST Jessie Buckley, Johnny Flynn, Geraldine James, Charley Palmer Rothwell

This bold debut set in Jersey brings a freshness to the romantic thriller genre, largely thanks to engrossing breakout performances from its two leads.

Moll (Jessie Buckley), a troubled young woman controlled by her oppressive family in small-town Jersey, meets the rugged, mysterious Pascal (Johnny Flynn) with whom she engages in a relationship. But the couple become embroiled in a police investigation into a string of murders on the island, and Moll must determine to what extent she cares that Pascal is a suspect. Boasting breakout performances from Buckley and Flynn, Michael Pearce’s hugely impressive debut is a controlled, smouldering thriller.
(2017 UK 102 mins)

Writer-director Michael Pearce’s feature debut is an ambitious, deliciously dark psychodrama. Bolstered by two star performances, Beast is equal parts modern gothic fairytale and crime thriller … Grounding this high-flung gothic are Buckley and Flynn astonishing performances, both equally predatory and vulnerable … Beast is rough around the edges but as a feature debut marks out its director as one of the most intriguing new talents in British filmmaking.  Christopher Machell, CineVue
