This pulse-pounding thriller from Paul Greengrass is a multi-layered dramatisation of the 2009 hijacking of a US container ship by Somali pirates.  Cautious but experienced Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) and a young fisherman-turned-pirate find themselves set against each other, but both are in fact at the mercy of the shadowy hand of global economics.  The stunning cinematography and rousing score add to the beauty and impact of this impressive film. Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the US container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is – through director Paul Greengrass’s distinctive lens – simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalisation. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage.

British director Paul Greengrass has the rare gift of working with action-thriller material and making something cohesive, layered and complex from it. He did so superbly in United 93 and in his two Bourne films: and with Captain Phillips, an account of Somali pirates boarding an American cargo ship and kidnapping its captain, Greengrass remains at the top of his game. The film also features an outstanding performance by Tom Hanks, who has been handed his strongest lead role in years: both he and Greengrass should find themselves short-listed for awards in coming months… Captain Phillips is a triumph of solid, professional and sometimes inspired film crafts, deserving of all the plaudits that come its way. David Gritten, The Telegraph
