DIRECTOR Xavier Legrand
CAST Thomas Gioria, Léa Drucker, Denis Ménochet, Mathilde Auneveux
A riveting portrait of an acrimonious custody battle, viewed from the perspective of the 12-year-old boy caught in the middle.
This brilliant debut from director Xavier Legrand is a gripping depiction of the fallout from a bitter custody battle. Miriam has left her husband Antoine, accusing him of violence, and wants to keep him out of her son’s life. The judge gives a seemingly repentant Antoine the benefit of the doubt, setting in motion a chain of events that is almost unbearably tense. With restrained performances throughout, this is a powerful, brilliantly acted drama.
(2017 France 94 mins Subtitled)
No one does heavy-duty domestic drama quite like the French… Legrand’s direction is unfussy, and all the more effective for it. But it’s the feel-of-the-real acting from Léa Drucker, Thomas Gioria and, in particular, Denis Ménochet (as the abusive husband/dad) that really transforms ‘Custody’ into something nail-bitingly special. The subject matter won’t be to everyone’s taste, but for more adventurous viewers this is something to be savoured, if not always comfortably. Dave Aldridge, Radio Times
