DIRECTOR Matteo Garrone
CAST Marcello Fonte, Edoardo Pesce, Nunzia Schiano, Adamo Dionisi
An intriguing Italian drama as a mild-mannered dog groomer finds himself caught up in the criminal underworld.
Drawing on a true Italian crime story from the 1980s, this updated David and Goliath story from Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah, Tale of Tales) follows the mild-mannered Marcello who grooms dogs for a living in a distant suburb of Rome. To make ends meet and provide for his teenage daughter, Marcello has a fleeting involvement with the criminal underworld, which ultimately puts him in the crosshairs of former boxer and local bully Simoncino. The seedy concrete wasteland makes a vivid setting for this visceral morality tale anchored by Marcello Fonte’s subtle performance as the forlorn Marcello.
(2018 Italy / France 103 mins Subtitled)
From award-winning Gomorrah director Matteo Garrone comes another crime tale similarly set in a poor outlying Italian community ruled over by the Camorra … A daring mix of humour, morality play and extreme violence, it’s stunningly composed and just as stunningly acted. Fonte justly scooped best actor at Cannes for his performance. Like Mean Streets as directed by Paolo Sorrentino. With extra poodles. Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, Metro
