Aardman’s gloriously funny stop-motion animation sees a Stone Age tribe take on their Bronze Age invaders at a prehistoric game of football.
In the latest stop-motion animation from the brilliant Aardman studio (Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep), Dug (Eddie Redmayne) and his pet pig Hognob live a quiet Stone Age life. But when the villainous Lord Nooth and his Bronze Age tribe invade, Dug and his friends fight back with a challenge their oppressors cannot refuse: a football tournament! A charming family film that bursts with daffy humour and eccentric characters.

Early Man provides a crowd-pleasing cocktail of pathos and pratfalls. The voice cast are smashing, with supporting turns from the likes of Gina Yashere, Johnny Vegas, Richard Ayoade and Miriam Margolyes adding depth and diversity to the characters … What’s most impressive, however, is the sheer hit rate of the gags … Early Man kept me laughing like a giddy fool from start to finish. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit may remain Aardman’s high-water mark, but this boisterous romp lifted my spirits and tickled my funny bone. In these dark days, that’s something to cheer about.
