BUY TICKETS 8pm Monday 26 March
DIRECTOR Sebastián Lelio
CAST Daniela Vega, Francisco Reyes, Luis Gnecco, Aline Küppenheim
A superb and compassionate Chilean drama about a transgender woman mourning her dead lover and fighting prejudice on all sides.
A highly engaging film about Marina, a transgender woman whose grief at the sudden death of her older partner is greatly magnified as she is treated like a criminal by his family, who would prefer she didn’t exist. Love and cohabitation count for little and she has to fight for her rights, her home and even custody of her dog. A superb, compassionate human drama with a knockout performance from Daniela Vega.
(2017 Chile / Germany / Spain / USA 104 mins Subtitled)
The style of the film is equally fluid, moving from modern romance via social-realist drama to quasi-Lynchian detective thriller, the last signalled by the discovery of a key that leads the narrative down a rabbit hole … At the centre of it all is Vega, upon whose face cinematographer Benjamin Echazarreta focuses closely for much of the film. A magnetic screen presence, Vega is called upon to unify the film’s shifting moods – no mean feat. It’s a challenge to which she rises with ease, capturing our attention, engaging our sympathies, and stealing our hearts. Mark Kermode, The Observer
