Benedict Cumberbatch plays The Grinch in this endearing new animated adaptation of Dr Seuss’ beloved festive tale.
This festive animation, based on Dr Seuss’ beloved classic, tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the miserable Grinch who lives alone apart from his loyal dog Max. But the inhabitants of Whoville disturb him with their seasonal jollity. A funny, heartwarming, visually stunning treat.
(2018 China / USA 90 mins)
Bah humbug to anyone who can say no to Benedict Cumberbatch as America’s favourite Christmas-refusenik. True, this CGI take on the Dr Seuss classic feels familiar in more ways than one. Not surprisingly, Illumination, the company that gave us Despicable Me, have made the Grinch Gru-ish. But if you love Gru (as I do), that’s no bad thing … the script keeps the focus on the Grinch and Cindy, whose encounters are magical. It’s OK to be angsty is the subliminal message of a festive adventure that is destined to make millions of tots happy. Charlotte O’Sullivan, Evening Standard
