Lily James stars as a free-spirited writer learning about life in Nazi-occupied Guernsey in this delightful adaptation of the best-selling book.

Juliet Ashton (Lily James) is a journalist who hopes to tell the story of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society – a book club whose love of fiction kept them going through the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands. When she visits Guernsey, Juliet uncovers buried secrets but also finds herself charmed by the locals, especially Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman). A delightful adaptation of the best-selling book by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral).
(2018 USA / UK 124 mins)

The title might be an unwieldy mouthful of words, but the rest of this charming, picturesque drama is not nearly so challenging. It’s part mystery, part love-triangle romance, unfolding with the gentility of an early-Sunday-evening BBC show. It takes place in a world where awful things happen, but our eye is always tastefully averted to prettier things. It’s escapist in several senses … This could not be more British a movie: nostalgic, thoroughly well acted, abundantly leafy and told in such a gentle way as to seem almost embarrassed about imposing.  Olly Richards, Empire
