CAST Paul Bettany, Sam Claflin, Asa Butterfield, Toby Jones

This powerful film set in 1918 follows an eager new recruit who joins war-weary officers in the trenches as they await orders for the latest offensive.

Saturday’s screening will be followed by a hosted discussion about the film.

In this new adaptation of RC Sherriff’s classic play set in 1918, a youthful new recruit, Lieutenant Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), has pulled strings to join his childhood hero Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin) on the front line. But war-weary Stanhope is horrified by Raleigh’s arrival into the tension and claustrophobia of the officers’ dugout, where they are anticipating a massive German advance. Superbly acted, Journey’s End brings a fresh and powerful sense of the First World War’s cost to a generation.
(2017 UK 108 mins)

First performed barely a decade after the end of World War I, at a time when the wounds were still raw, Journey’s End is a bracing and understandably angry play. This, the fourth cinematic adaptation, is fittingly bracing and angry (and superbly acted) … An outstanding cast savours performing a play that has stood the test of time. Avoiding sentimentality, this is a valuable rejoinder to those who would sugar-coat mass slaughter.  Andrew Lowry, Empire
