DIRECTOR Yorgos Lanthimos
CAST Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Alicia Silverstone, Barry Keoghan
Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman star in this provocative and absurdist morality tale from Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster).
Interlacing elements of Greek tragedy, surrealism and absurdist horror, Yorgos Lanthimos’s follow-up to The Lobster is a deliciously twisted and slyly macabre morality tale. Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a cardiac surgeon who develops a paternal friendship with 16-year-old Martin (Barry Keoghan). Over time Steven introduces Martin to his wife (Nicole Kidman) and two children and the boy becomes something like an adopted son, but it’s not long before things start to get strange. With uniformly great performances from a stellar cast and a pitch-black script, this is a deliciously dark, funny and clever film.
(2017 UK / Ireland 121 mins)
Lanthimos’s film is a shattering suburban nocturne about a rich, happy family surreally slip-sliding into hell that slinks around your subconscious like a hungry panther, hunting for soft spots into which it can sink its fangs … This sounds wildly uncomfortable to watch, and is. It’s also venomously funny … When absurdism feels this wrong, you know it’s being done right. Robbie Collin, The Telegraph
