PLAY broadcast AS LIVE from the Duke of York’s Theatre, London (recorded live on Thursday 27 September)
Ian McKellen gives an intensely moving portrayal of Lear in the five-star Chichester Festival Theatre production which transfers to the West End. Jonathan Munby directs this ‘nuanced and powerful’ (The Times) contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play.
Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a King, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.
It is McKellen’s detailed performance that’s the production’s triumph. With finely measured intelligence he traces Lear’s inexorable movement from pomp via rage and shambolic delirium to melancholy tenderness and the agony of belated self-knowledge. Henry Hitchings, The Standard
