DIRECTOR Steven Soderbergh
CAST Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Riley Keough
Steven Sodebergh’s slick and fun heist caper set in the American South follows two brothers planning a raid on a racing track.
Marking a return to the big screen for Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich), this heist caper follows the Logan brothers (Channing Tatum and Adam Driver) who, down on their luck in the American South, get an idea so stupid and yet so brilliant that it might just set them up for life: to rob the local stock car racing track on its biggest day of the year. With the help of Joe Bang (a platinum-coiffed Daniel Craig), the brothers plot their daring raid. Super slick and great fun, this comic thriller brims with energy and wit.
(2017 USA 119 mins)
Though the prison break and heist scenes are slickly and efficiently staged, the film’s great strength is its good nature. Soderbergh sets his crime caper in West Virginia (cue John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads), and features a beauty pageant, a saloon bar and a cameo from country-pop star LeAnn Rimes. But not all the film’s jokes are about the south; there’s a warm wackiness to the humour. Simran Hans, The Observer
