DIRECTOR Steven Spielberg
CAST Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg
Steven Spielberg’s virtual reality adventure is a brilliant cinematic ride full of 80s pop culture references and dazzling effects.
It’s the year 2045, and civilisation is on the brink of collapse. People escape their harsh reality in the OASIS, an immersive virtual world where you can go anywhere and do anything. Creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance) has left his fortune and control of the OASIS to the winner of a contest designed to find a worthy heir. When unlikely hero Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) conquers the first challenge, he and his friends are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger. Visually stunning and chock full of ‘80s pop culture references.
(2018 USA 140 mins)
Spielberg switches the action between the real and virtual worlds with dazzling aplomb, seamlessly melding the peril in both states of reality and upping the stakes as the keys are uncovered and we approach the endgame. The film does occasionally get sidetracked by exposition … But mostly it’s a joy, with Spielberg letting loose for the type of blockbuster moviemaking that made his name, but is increasingly infrequent in his filmography. And shows that when he’s on his game, there’s no-one else who comes close. Jonathan Pile, Empire
