PLAY broadcast LIVE from The Old Vic, London

Daniel Radcliffe stars in David Leveaux’s new production which marks the 50th anniversary of Tom Stoppard’s brilliant play.

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, The Woman in Black), Joshua McGuire (The Hour) and David Haig (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Witness for the Prosecution) star in Tom Stoppard’s brilliantly funny situation comedy, broadcast by NT Live from The Old Vic theatre in London.

Against the backdrop of Hamlet, two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, take centre stage. As the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of Shakespeare’s iconic drama, they become increasingly out of their depth as their version of the story unfolds.

The play’s the thing. Fifty years after its professional premiere at this very theatre, Tom Stoppard’s philosophical comedy still shines brightly. It helps that this revival stars Daniel Radcliffe, who is perfectly matched by Joshua McGuire, and that David Leveaux’s production is nimble and inventive. But it is the wit of the young Stoppard that keeps the play fresh and alive … The cheering fact is that this is a young man’s play that still seems sprightly, invigorating and even moving in its preoccupation with the inevitability of death.  Michael Billington, The Guardian
