DIRECTOR Clint Eastwood
CAST Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Valerie Mahaffey, Delphi Harrington
Tom Hanks is the dignified hero in Clint Eastwood’s story of the heroic pilot who landed his passenger jet on the Hudson River.
In 2009, when birds blew out both engines of a passenger jet just moments after take-off, pilot Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger successfully brought the plane down in an emergency landing on New York’s Hudson River. This retelling of those events and the subsequent investigation paints a portrait of a dignified, hard-working hero, with a typically strong performance from Tom Hanks under Clint Eastwood’s assured, unpretentious direction.
(2016 USA 96 mins)
Sully is the kind of film that Howard Hawks might have made in times gone by. It’s a tale of quiet, unfussy heroism; of highly trained professionals doing their jobs in the most challenging circumstances imaginable. It is one of its 86-year-old director Clint Eastwood’s finest and most unshowy features, just over 90 minutes long and as efficient in its exposition as Captain “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) was in crash landing his stricken plane on the Hudson river on a freezing January day in 2009.
