An intelligent French drama about the Vatican’s investigation of a young girl who claims to have seen the Virgin Mary.

Troubled journalist Jacques (Vincent Lindon) is recruited by the Vatican to investigate a young girl who claims to have been visited by the Virgin Mary. Confronted with opposing views from clergy and sceptics, Jacques forms a bond with Anna but questions both her sincerity and the role of the church in promoting her as a visionary. An intelligent psychological drama exploring faith, doubt, mass hysteria and the desperate human need for supernatural reassurance.
(2018 France 144 mins Subtitled)

Procedural investigation movies tend to pose questions such as: who killed this guy, who stole the cash or where on earth is this missing woman? Xavier Giannolli’s new film, The Apparition, lays down a conundrum to flummox even the most seasoned of gumshoe – does God actually exist? … Giannolli’s serious, slow-burn drama is at its best when keeping slithers of key information just out of sight, shifting away from the question of whether Anna is being coerced into lying and retaining questions of a more philosophical bent in its glassy sight-lines … Come for Lindon, stay for young female newcomer, Galatéa Bellugi.  Dave Jenkins, Little White Lies
