DIRECTOR James Marsh
CAST Colin Firth, Rachel Weisz, David Thewlis, Ken Stott

Colin Firth stars in this moving British drama about amateur yachtsman Donald Crowhurst as he joins the first single-handed round-the-world yacht race.

In 1968, amateur yachtsman and failing inventor Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth) entered the first non-stop, single-handed, round-the-world yacht race, in a boat of his own design. He wagered everything upon success, including his family’s financial security and his reputation. But once he was alone at sea, he found himself battling the elements and his own demons. An intense and moving British drama from James Marsh (Man on WireThe Theory of Everything) with fine performances from Firth and Rachel Weisz as Crowhurst’s wife.
(2017 UK 102 mins)

Directed with even-keeled intelligence by James Marsh, and buoyed by a performance of customary reserve and resolve from Colin Firth, “The Mercy” tells its story — once headline material, now poignantly little-remembered — about as well as it can be told … it’s primarily Firth’s showcase, and his most generous in several years. The role of Crowhurst is an ideal fit for an actor who has long specialized in a kind of wounded, compromised heroism, whether as English royalty or a romantic lead.  Guy Lodge, Variety
