This award-winning South African debut is a complex and powerful exploration of masculinity and sexuality within the Xhosa community.
The traditional rite of passage ritual of the Xhosa community forms the background to this powerful exploration of masculinity which won the First Feature Award at London Film Festival in 2017. Xolani, a sensitive factory worker, is assigned to mentor Kwanda, a city boy from Johannesburg sent by his wealthy father to be toughened up, but Kwanda’s queer identity and the threat of exposure raises the tension to breaking point. A visually breath-taking, complex and ground-breaking tale of closeted sexuality in South Africa.
(2017 South Africa / Germany / Netherlands / France 88 mins Subtitled)
Trengove builds a sense of dread among the three central characters, their wary gazes and physical provocations brimming with potential violence. Recognizing uneasy truths about themselves in one another, they’re each threatened, with Xolani caught between the swaggering Vija, whom he loves, and the defiant Kwanda, who boldly questions, and withdraws from, the rite of passage. As Paul Ozgur’s alert camerawork captures the dangerously shifting dynamics, the strong performances are fueled by the wild beauty of the rural setting. Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter
