The Fry Art Gallery in association with Saffron Screen present The Art of Ealing Studios and Edward Bawden with a screening of The Titfield Thunderbolt (U)
An illustrated talk by Claire Smith, Curator: Stills, Posters and Designs at the British Film Institute, including a screening of the Ealing Comedy The Titfield Thunderbolt (Charles Crichton, 1953, Cert. U) with tea and homemade cakes.
Friends Meeting House, 75 High Street, Saffron Walden CB10 1AA.
Edward Bawden is recognised as one of Britain’s foremost artists and designers of the twentieth century and his work is being celebrated with a major retrospective at The Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden, from 1 April to 28 October 2018. This exhibition will include over 200 artworks and other items, many of which have either not been seen before or not displayed in recent years. The exhibition will also form part of the Royal Academy’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
Bawden collaborated twice with Ealing, Hue and Cry (1947) and the classic The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953), producing original designs for posters and related publicity material. Claire Smith’s talk will reference Bawden’s graphic design productivity, as well as the work of Ealing Studios, whose output in the 1940’s and 1950’s is often defined as a golden age for British cinema.
The Titfield Thunderbolt: when British Railways announce the closure of the Titfield to Mallingford Branch line, a group of local villagers make a bid to run it themselves, backed by a rich member of the community, who is attracted by the lack of licensing hours on trains.
Tickets: £12 (30 & under £8)
Event will finish approx 7.15pm.
