DIRECTOR Stephen Frears
CAST Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith

Judi Dench stars as Queen Victoria in Stephen Frears’ film about the Queen’s friendship with an Indian clerk in the later years of her life. The screening on Wednesday 25 October will be followed by a Q&A with author & journalist Shrabani Basu (who wrote the book on which the film is based)

Focusing on real events in Queen Victoria’s later years, Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) deftly weaves the tale of a remarkable friendship – that between the monarch and Abdul Karim, a young clerk who came from India to celebrate the Golden Jubilee. Despite palace interference, the two form a convivial bond as an ageing Victoria sees a changing world through new eyes. It is fascinating to see Judi Dench reprising her role as Queen Victoria in a story with similarities to the one told in Mrs Brown.
(2017 UK / USA 112 mins)

Stephen Frears, the director of The Queen, knows how to keep the culture-clash comedy bright and sprightly, and Lee Hall, the screenwriter of Billy Elliot, has written a script which can be charming fun while having a few digs at racism and snobbery along the way. Dench, of course, is as formidable but soft-centred as everyone’s dream grandma, and the supporting actors, including Olivia Williams, Eddie Izzard and the late Tim Pigott-Smith, do plenty of expert harrumphing as the various officials who can’t believe that a foreigner is suddenly at the heart of the Queen’s Household.  Nicholas Barber, BBC
