Audience to Choose Next Dementia-friendly Film

Saffron Screen’s dementia-friendly screenings continue this month with classic Hollywood musical, The Wizard of Oz and the audience will have a chance to say what they’d like to see next time!

The event, on Wednesday 29th May, is the 11th of its kind and offers those living with dementia an opportunity to see a film in a relaxed, supportive and safe environment. This particular screening is slightly more unusual because the audience will have a chance to pick the film for the 12th screening.

Saffron Screen’s Community Engagement Project Leaders, Jacque Woolley says;
“By handing the power back to the audience we hope to ensure that the film is enjoyed by as many people as possible”.

The very popular screenings are supported by Saffron Walden Dementia Action Alliance the key features include: more lighting, no adverts, a 15 minute interval and a welcoming environment for those living with dementia and their family, friends and carers. Moving around and noise are accepted and the doors open one hour before the film starts for socialising and acclimatising. Tickets are priced at £5, carer tickets are free and the ticket price includes a free hot drink and biscuits.

Saffron Screen is committed to making the cinema more accessible also offering pop-up events in more rural areas of Uttlesford, autism-friendly screenings, an audio description service on most films and subtitled films for the hard of hearing. It is also wheelchair friendly and has an induction loop.

The Wizard of Oz (U) will be shown on Wednesday 29th May at 3pm. Doors open at 2pm. Tickets are available in person from the Tourist Information Centre and box office or online at www.saffronscreen.com.
