A special 35mm screening of this powerful and extraordinarily beautiful examination of masculinity by one of French auteur Claire Denis’ finest films.
Prepare for our screening of High Life, the first English language film from French auteur Claire Denis, with a special 35mm screening of one of her finest films. Denis Lavant stars as Galoup, a sergeant-major in the French Foreign Legion whose position and power are threatened when the bravery and heroism of new recruit Sentain (Grégoire Colin) attracts the attention of the platoon’s commandant. Enraged, Galoup plots Sentain’s downfall, a doomed course of action that leads to his own undoing. A powerful and extraordinarily beautiful examination of masculinity. Screened in 35mm.
(1999 France 91 mins Subtitled)
A gorgeous, compulsively poetic and semi-stylised film, transcribing with unexpected sympathy the asceticism and severity of the soldier’s life … What is really remarkable about Denis’s film is the way she succeeds in fusing the real and the dreamlike, the naturalistic and the figurative, into one visual conceit. Never for one moment does this shimmering, simmering emotional desert storm of a film relax its grip on your senses. Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
