DIRECTOR Felix van Groeningen
CAST Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, Maura Tierney, Amy Ryan

Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet star in this moving story of a father-son relationship, troubled by the son’s spiralling drug use.

Based on a true story and adapted from two memoirs by both father and son, this film follows David Sheff (Steve Carell), a successful journalist and proud father, and his teenage son Nic (Timothée Chalamet). When Nic begins experimenting with marijuana, David is relaxed about it, but then Nic’s casual smoking develops into an urgent addiction to crystal meth. As Nic transforms from his father’s beautiful boy into an unhappy and chaotic addict, their relationship is challenged to its core. Heartbreaking, inspiring and beautifully acted.
(2018 USA 120 mins)

Beautiful Boy is a mosaic of memory and feeling told through a desperate father’s eyes and a boy’s path to a troubled adulthood. It’s also a portrait of the addict as a young man. Softness and sharp edges all blur into one in Felix van Groeningen’s film about the inescapable grasp of substance abuse and the role it played in the lives of father and son David and Nic Sheff … Van Groeningen delivers a delicate and nuanced account of the Sheff family in crisis. Both Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet are outstanding as David and Nic respectively, and they share an authentic empathy and connection that guides the entire film.  Caitlin Quinlan, The Skinny

Nominated for a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for Timothée Chalamet.
