A mixture of animation and live action set in the Pokémon universe as Detective Pikachu goes on the hunt for a missing detective.
Ace detective Harry Goodman mysteriously goes missing, prompting his son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Detective Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds): a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that threatens the whole Pokémon universe.
(2019 Japan / USA 104 mins)
Whoever decided that the film needed Ryan Reynolds deserves an enormous pay rise. His voice coming out of a little fluffy hamster-y thing is innately amusing, but his lines are also sharp, silly and knowing. The odd-couple riffing between him and Smith produces some scenes of surreal comic excellence … it’s confident that it’s so beloved that it can make relentless, affectionate fun of [Pokemon], with the help of a small, yellow, snarky idiot. It’s impossible to overstate how much this film owes to Ryan Reynolds. Even if you don’t understand Pikachu’s world, everyone can understand a great joke superbly delivered. Olly Richards, Empire
