DIRECTOR Asif Kapadia
Asif Kapadia (Senna, Amy) has made another gripping documentary following the fascinating life of the football star and, in particular, his time in Naples.
Asif Kapadia’s follow up to Senna and Amy is a gripping account of Diego Maradona’s playing career, made up entirely of found footage, cleverly chosen and shaped. We see his boyhood in the shantytown of Villa Fiorito, his calamitous career at Barcelona and his move to Naples, which made him not only a hero and a living saint but also a ‘made guy’ for the Camorra mobsters. As mesmeric as its subject’s skills and as raw as his life off the pitch, Kapadia’s latest is another documentary of real class and insight.
(2019 UK 130 mins)
As mesmeric as its subject’s skills and as raw as his life off the pitch, Asif Kapadia’s latest is another doc of real class and insight … Kapadia gives us a fevered, joyous, melancholy and sometimes toxic Neapolitan love story that presents the man in all his contradictions and complexity. He was the block kid who found a new home, but somehow lost his soul. What a way to complete a hat-trick of documentaries. Phil de Semlyen, Time Out
