Das Rheingold
Broadcast live from the Royal Opera House.
The first instalment of Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen, directed by Australian Barrie Kosky (ROH Carmen and Agrippina) and conducted by Antonio Pappano. When a precious hoard of gold is stolen from the river Rhine, it unleashes a chain of destructive events, pitting gods and mortals against one another for generations.
Das Rheingold heralds the start of the first new Ring Cycle at Covent Garden for 19 years, with an outstanding cast led by Christopher Maltman and Christopher Purves and the mighty forces of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. A spectacular journey into the world of myth, dream and memory, with the figure of Erda – Mother Earth herself – at its centre.
