Cast: Tony Palmer, Gustav Holst, Imogen Holst

Warning: This film is exempt from certification but does contain archival footage viewers might find distressing.

In the Bleak Midwinter is the only full-length film about this extraordinary composer, being shown as part of Thaxted Festival’s celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Gustav Holst.

Holst, who lived in Thaxted, is most known for The Planets, one of the most popular pieces of classical music ever written, yet his life and other works are relatively unknown. Legendary film-maker, Tony Palmer, has made ground-breaking and award-winning documentaries on Maria Callas, Margot Fonteyn, Igor Stravinsky, Richard Wagner, Carl Orff, Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams. He introduces his film and will take questions afterwards. Hosted by Festival Artistic Director, Andrew Jenkins.
