Films to watch – and support your local cinema

System Crasher (15)
Nora Fingscheidt’s narrative debut follows a wild child (brilliantly played by Helena Zengel) who’s been failed by Germany’s foster system. The deserved winner of numerous awards, this is an emotional and rewarding watch.

A fascinating documentary which follows four teens through the joys and heartbreaks of their last year in high school in a close-knit rural Florida town – an insight into a community and a universal celebration of that moment when young people are poised on the cusp of adulthood and leaving home. 

Cunningham (U)
A fascinating and beautiful documentary about the legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham featuring stunning excerpts from his works.

The Perfect Candidate (PG)
This new film from Saudi director Haifaa Al Mansour (Wadjda) is an inspiring, feel-good drama about a young doctor unexpectedly running for election.

Polina (12A)
A beautiful drama about Polina (played by professional dancer Anastasia Shevtsova), a promising classical ballet dancer who is about to join the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet when she discovers contemporary dance, under the tutelage of Juliette Binoche’s choreographer.

Hannah (12A)
An intimate portrait of a woman, immaculately played by Charlotte Rampling, drifting between reality and denial when she is left alone to grapple with the consequences of her husband’s imprisonment.

Styx (12A)
An engrossing and intelligent drama about a woman whose solo sailing trip is derailed when she encounters an overloaded boat full of refugees.
