DIRECTOR Penny Lane
A wickedly topical and frequently hilarious exploration of religious freedom in America. In spite of its name, the Satanic Temple is essentially a media-savvy pressure group with the primary goal of ‘encouraging benevolence and empathy among all people’. The group stages a series of public actions designed to challenge corrupt authority and reinforce the separation of church and state. They prove that, with little more than a clever idea, a mischievous sense of humour and a few rebellious friends, you can speak truth to power in some truly profound ways.
(2019 USA 94 mins)
The title card for Penny Lane’s phenomenal “Hail Satan?” waits a beat before adding the question mark. Are the members of the Satanic Temple for real? No … and yes … Like her fantastic 2013 doc “Our Nixon,” Lane sets out to subvert American history with intelligence and wit. Here, she asks us to question why certain religions are deemed “normal,” even though, notes one Temple member, Catholic mass is all about the symbolic drinking of blood. But she’s also out to entertain … Is this a stunt? Or as Lane puts it, “Do you think that most people think you’re joking, or most people think you’re evil?” Greaves and his disciples just want most people to think the Satanists have a point. Hail freedom! Amy Nicholson, Variety
