Free Online Film Course: How to Be a Femme Fatale

BOOK NOW 7.30pm Monday 24 August

We are thrilled to offer a FREE online film course with Ellen Cheshire, exploring the Femme Fatale in cinema. Ellen taught our courses on Gothic Film and European Cinema in 2019 and was to have presented a course on The Greatest Films in May this year.

With examples of the classic film noirs of the 1940s/50s, and the Neo-Noirs of the 80/90s, Ellen will take you through the journey the ‘Femme Fatale’ takes from the initial idea that someone in her life just has to go to the final showdown. By looking at examples from the Golden Age of Hollywood, and those made a few decades later, we can see how attitudes towards female sexuality and morality have changed over time.

Featured Films: Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon, The Postman Always Ring Twice, Body Heat, To Die For, The Last Seduction and Bound.

This will be a 90 minute course with a short break in the middle, presented via Zoom. Please book your ticket via the link above for the course and we will send you a Zoom link via email shortly before the event.

Note: the denouements of Double Indemnity and Bound will be discussed.

Ellen Cheshire has a BA in English and Film and a MA in Gothic: culture, subculture and counterculture. She has written books on Ang Lee, Jane Campion, Bio-Pics, Audrey Hepburn and The Coen Brothers, and contributed chapters to books on War movies, Fantasy films, Silent films, Charlie Chaplin, James Bond, and is a contributing author to the WJEC A Level Film Studies Textbook.
