DIRECTOR Todd Phillips
CAST Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy

Joaquin Phoenix gives a powerhouse performance in this study of how The Joker assumed his identity.

This standalone story of iconic arch-nemesis The Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night … but finds the joke always seems to be on him. One bad decision brings about a chain reaction of escalating, violent events in this gritty character study of a villain we all thought we knew. Phoenix gives a brilliant performance in this darkly spectacular film.
(2019 Canada / USA 122 mins)

Infused with the grimy splendour of a Martin Scorsese picture, it’s a film that substantially simmers, with outbursts of shocking, impactful violence … Following a credible trajectory, there’s an overarching sympathy for Arthur’s predicament but, as his capacity for violence is unleashed and his confidence grows, he begins to loom terrifyingly large and the familiar pieces begin to shift into place.  Emma Simmonds, Radio Times

Winner of Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globe awards for Best Actor and Original Score.
