DIRECTOR Nisha Ganatra
CAST Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, John Lithgow, Hugh Dancy

A sharp and witty comedy featuring Emma Thompson as a late-night talk show host and Mindy Kaling as the new writer who joins the all-male team.

Emma Thompson plays a legendary late-night talk show host whose world is turned upside down when she hires her only female staff writer (Mindy Kaling). Originally intended to smooth over diversity concerns, her decision has unexpectedly hilarious consequences as the two women, separated by culture and generation, are united by their love of a biting punchline. Kaling has written this film, based on her experiences of being the only woman in the writers’ room, and Thompson clearly relishes a rare opportunity to play a comic co-lead, firing off one-liners with great exuberance.
(2019 USA 102 mins)

Comedian Mindy Kaling brings her piquant perspective to a classic tale of an outsider entering a hostile workplace. Taking on an industry she knows all too well, TV comedy, the writer-star piles subjects for discussion up high, framing her observations within a peppy, commercially appealing narrative, in a film that plays like Working Girl meets 30 Rock … Wielding a winningly nuanced grasp of its issues – authenticity, feminism, ageism, diversity, privilege – Late Night acknowledges the role of fear and need for co-operation in its battle-of-the-sexes narrative, without compromising its own ideals. Looking beyond the obvious bad guys, its intrinsic good nature suggests a way past society’s current stalemate.  Emma Simmonds, The List
