Mary Poppins Returns
Screening generously sponsored by BearWalden CrossFit
DIRECTOR Rob Marshall
CAST Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Ben Whishaw
Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) brings new friends, songs and a spoonful of sugar to her reunion with the Banks family.
Half a century after Julie Andrews glided onto our screens as the magical nanny, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to bring some joy to Michael Banks’ family after they suffer a personal loss. The film is set in 1935, 25 years after the original, and includes a number of nods to the classic – from flying kites to animated penguins – and, of course, Dick Van Dyke. A visually dazzling treat with great performances and glorious new songs.
(2018 USA 130 mins + interval)
The moment Emily Blunt sails serenely down from the sky on the end of a kite, she makes this role her own. And, like her, this remake is spit spot-on … it’s a glorious, tear-soaked nostalgia trip, gussied up in Sandy Powell’s sensational, sherbet-coloured costumes. Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, Metro
