DIRECTOR Josie Rourke
CAST Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, Gemma Chan, David Tennant
Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie excel in theatre director Josie Rourke’s historical drama about Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I.
The Mary Queen of Scots glove is on display in the Costume gallery at Saffron Walden Museum. It is reported to have been given to Marmaduke Dayrell, Master of the Household at Fotheringay Castle, by Mary Queen of Scots on the morning of her execution in 1587.
This historical drama about the turbulent life of Mary Stuart puts the conflict between two formidable women centre stage. After returning to Scotland following the death of her first husband, Mary (Saoirse Ronan) asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening the sovereignty of Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). Adapted from the biography by Cambridge historian John Guy, this is a darkly compelling version by acclaimed theatre director Josie Rourke of the tale of political intrigue and power struggle, with excellent performances.
(2018 UK 124 mins)
The conviction of Ronan and Robbie, and a strong supporting cast … make this a compelling clash of personalities. Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown, and it’s sad when even an enemy queen is closer to understanding your problems than the people you love. A history lesson with more fire in the belly than most. It turns out that a feminist angle really can revive the same old Tudor psychodramas, thanks in large part to Ronan and Robbie’s authoritative performances. Helen O’Hara, Empire
Nominated for three BAFTAs including Best Supporting Actress (Margot Robbie) and two Oscars.
