DIRECTOR Gavin Hood
CAST Keira Knightley, Matt Smith, Matthew Goode, Ralph Fiennes
Keira Knightley leads an all-star British cast in this riveting political thriller about whistleblower Katharine Gun, directed by Gavin Hood (Eye in the Sky).
In 2003, British intelligence specialist Katharine Gun discovered that the US was enlisting Britain’s help to collect compromising information about UN Security Council members in order to blackmail them into supporting the invasion of Iraq. Gun decided to act as a whistleblower, despite the risks to her job and her family. Knightley gives a powerful performance in this sharp political thriller from Hood (Eye in the Sky).
(2019 UK / USA 112 mins)
Gavin Hood’s ‘Eye in the Sky’ follow-up is another tense examination of moral corruption at the highest level. Set at a time when a Western government telling porkies still counted as a major scandal, ‘Official Secrets’ definitely feels like a period movie, despite its early noughties setting. It’s one part tense spy thriller to two parts multi-stranded journo procedural, and while it’ll do nothing to restore trust in the august bodies that rule the land, it’s a pacy, palm-clammying watch.
