The Kid Who Would Be King
DIRECTOR Joe Cornish
CAST Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Denise Gough, Rebecca Ferguson, Patrick Stewart
A hugely entertaining update of the Arthurian legend as schoolboy Alex finds his world turned upside-down when he accidentally releases Excalibur.
Talented writer-director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, Ant-Man) updates the Arthurian legend to contemporary England. 12-year-old Alex whose world is turned upside-down when he accidentally releases the ancient sword in the stone, Excalibur. He finds he is destined to form a new round table, enlisting his friends – as well as his former bullies – as well as legendary wizard Merlin – to battle with the villainous enchantress Morgana. A rollicking, irreverent family-friendly adventure.
(2019 UK / USA 120 mins)
The story is deftly told, with wit, momentum and a third-act battle sequence which cleverly recasts the youngsters’ school as a castle under siege … More proof that Cornish is a wizard at re-energising tired tropes. The characters are a delight, the action sequences thrum with invention, and when it’s funny, it’s very funny indeed. Nick de Semlyen, Empire
