OPERA captured live at the English National Opera and returning to cinemas.
English National Opera’s spectacular production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera is a popular hit with audiences of all ages. Experience the irresistible combination of wonderful wit, memorable melodies and hilarious antics in this acclaimed production from Jonathan Miller.
When flirting is banned in the town of Titipu, Nanki-Poo and his beloved Yum-Yum are forced to go to extreme measures to protect themselves and the town from the wrath of the all-powerful Mikado. Set in an ever-so English 1930s seaside hotel, ENO’s dazzlingly inventive staging of The Mikado returns to the London Coliseum for what for many has become the definitive production of this much-loved Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera.
Distinguished bass Robert Lloyd sings the role of the Mikado with Richard Suart as Ko-Ko and Mary Bevan and Anthony Gregory as the lovers Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo.
Revivals always differ, but it is as fresh as paint this time. If you have never seen it, go. If, like me, it’s a decade or two since you last went, then go again …The Mikado is a wonderful score, with both Gilbert and, in particular, Sullivan stretching themselves to great effect, but [Jonathan] Miller’s show liberates the piece to give of its best, as a good production should.
